Communications Summer Student (Summer 2027 Work Term)

We are looking for a creative, curious and organized Communications Summer Student to join our corporate communications team for the summer. This hands-on role will support a variety of internal communications activities, with a focus on writing, photography and administrative support. We are particularly interested in students with a journalism background and an interest in photography. The role will include opportunities to interview employees, write articles, take photographs and help bring our people and work to life through internal communications.
This is a summer student position based out of Calgary, working from our office 5 days per week with occasional field travel to Alberta facilities. This position is full-time from May to August 2027.
Key Responsibilities:
- Writing and storytelling:
- Research, interview and write short internal news stories, employee features and event recaps.
- Write short announcements, captions and other internal communications content.
- Help identify interesting people, projects and stories to share with employees.
- Photography, digital content and events:
- Take photos at company events, community initiatives and company sites with occasional travel to locations across Alberta.
- Assist with preparing and publishing content on the company intranet.
- Support internal communications initiatives, campaigns and events.
- Content organization and administrative support:
- Help establish consistent file naming and folder conventions, organize files and archive older materials.
- Audit existing intranet content and identify outdated, duplicate or missing information.
- Maintain communications calendar and track deliverables.
Key Skills:
- Strong writing and editing skills with an interest in writing articles.
- An interest in photography and an eye for capturing well composed, engaging images.
- Proactive, organized and comfortable interviewing and taking photos of people.
- Familiar with Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
- Proficiency with Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator is considered an asset.
- Organized, detail oriented and comfortable managing digital files and content.
- Prior internship, co-op, volunteer, customer service, or relevant work experience where you had exposure to journalism, article writing and photography is considered an asset.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a journalism post-secondary program or in a communications post-secondary program with a focus in journalism or media studies. Students with a track record of article writing and photography are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of the work term
- Must attach your most recent unofficial or official transcript with your application to be considered
- Must attach a portfolio including two writing and four photography samples from clients, prior work experiences or school projects.
- Available to work full-time in our Calgary office for the duration of the 4-month work term
- Ability and willingness to travel to Alberta field locations for primarily day trips
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license (or equivalent) preferred
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
- The successful candidate will be required to provide satisfactory references and pass a criminal background check
