Data Platform Architect

TAQA North is seeking a Data Platform Architect to join our Information Technology team. Reporting to the Manager, Enterprise Solutions Information Technology, this full‑time, Calgary‑based role will play a key part in designing and evolving our enterprise data platforms to support analytics, AI/ML, and cloud initiatives across the organization. The ideal candidate brings a strong blend of hands‑on technical expertise, architectural thinking, and the ability to collaborate with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
This position is based out of our downtown Calgary office.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Data Platform Architecture
- Design, build, and maintain enterprise data architecture across Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Databricks, and hybrid data environments Establish reference architectures and standards for data ingestion, storage, transformation, and consumption
- Lead architectural decisions for platforms including Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Lake, and Databricks
- Ensure data platforms meet requirements for scalability, performance, resiliency, security, and cost optimization
- Support and guide enterprise‑scale data engineering and ETL/ELT strategies
- Design data architectures that enable AI/ML, advanced analytics, and GenAI use cases
- Support feature stores, model training pipelines, and inference data patterns in production environments
- Enable self‑service analytics and reporting through Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and other BI tools
- Translate business and analytics requirements into scalable technical designs
- Act as a trusted advisor to stakeholders on data strategy and architecture
- Mentor data engineers and analysts on architecture standards and best practices
- Drive data platform modernization initiatives and continuous improvement
- Data Governance & Quality
- Define and support standards for data quality, metadata, lineage, access control, privacy, and compliance.
- Work with stakeholders to identify critical data domains and improve trust in enterprise data.
- Help establish data ownership, stewardship, and quality monitoring practices.
- Ensure data platforms align with security, regulatory, and enterprise governance expectations.
- Partner with data scientists, analysts, and business teams to ensure data readiness and quality
Your Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, BI architecture, or analytics platform delivery.
- Strong experience with Azure data services
- Hands‑on experience with Microsoft Fabric and/or Databricks
- Proven experience building and governing ETL/ELT pipelines
- Strong understanding of data modeling (dimensional, lakehouse, domain‑oriented)
- Experience supporting AI/ML or GenAI solutions in production, is considered an asset
- Knowledge of modern analytics and lakehouse architectures, is considered an asset
- DevOps/DataOps experience for data platforms, is considered an asset
- Familiarity with data governance, metadata, and lineage tools, is considered an asset
- Experience in regulated or enterprise‑scale environments, is considered an asset
- Relevant certifications (Azure, Databricks, AI/ML), is considered an asset
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Ability to provide three satisfactory professional references and a criminal background check.
